We spent some wonderful time in Kyoto. As I was looking for a rather quiet place, we decided to go to Uji. Uji offers beautiful nature, the Uji river, culture, tradition ...

In Uji you can wander in the past. As I like history very much, it was a great place to be.

We started with a visit to the Byodoin Temple. It is a Unesco world heritage. The architecture of the museum is stylish simple. That gives the many buddha statues even more value. It creates an impressive feeling.
Uji is famous for tea. The taste is nice due to the morning fog on the tea leaves.

Mitsuboshien-Kanbayashisannyu-Honten is a long-established store. The shop started in the Tensho Era. Along with the long history and inherited tradition, the store is known as the master of tea ceremony for the Shogunate.

The aim of the master of the shop is to teach as many people as possible to the tea ceremony. This way he supports the peaceful feeling of the tea ceremony throughout the world.

The last ten chapters of the Japanese classic novel The Tale of the Genji took place in Uji. In Uji you can visit The Tale of the Genji Museum.
No wonder, many couples like to walk along the Uji riverside.

We stayed in an elegant ryokan Uji Hanayashiki Ukifune-en. The view on the river was so romantic. The bath was partly on the balcony and warm water was running all the time. It was a relaxing sound. The water did wonders to our body after many hours walking.

The inhabitants of Uji are very kind. One man in particular was friendly to us and wanted to talk. We came to know that he stayed in Belgium for two months. He could even speak our language. We said goodbye in Flemish to him and he responded. " Tot ziens!"(Goodbye)
There was so much more to enjoy in Uji but the approaching typhoon made us to return to Nagano.
Japan has such a beautiful scenery and tradition !!! Japanese people can be proud on their country and we are lucky to be able to share it.

The Shine of Khmer Children (1994 - 2010)
Photo exhibition by Saito BAKU
FCCJ
Main Bar and Masukomi Sushi
Oct. 5 - Nov. 01, 2013
Having become embroiled in the war in neighboring Vietnam, civil war broke out in the peaceful Kingdom of Cambodia following the Lon Nol coup d' état in 1970.
Even after the Vietnam War ended, the killing continued in Cambodia, as a result of appalling ethnic cleansing, a war with Vietnam, and internecine conflict between four rival factions.
Peace was finally achieved at the Paris Peace Conference in 1991 and a general election was organized through the efforts of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), establishing a democratic constitutional monarchy under King Sihanouk.
The restoration of the monarchy and a policy of reestablishing Khmer culture were adopted in order to imbue the people with a feeling of national pride, and at the same time, the ‘Angkor’ site was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the cities are filled with young people who know nothing of war and whose eyes shine with hope for the future. These children of Siem Reap, the gateway to the Angkor ruins that has survived the confusion of war and now echoes to the sound of reconstruction, look forward to the rebirth of national pride founded on the former splendor of Khmer culture.
Saito BAKU
A major proportion of BAKU's work has been focused to Cambodia, particularly Angkor Wat. He has taken numerous photographs in and around the temple complex and of the people residing in the area. Major exhibitions included the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, UN headquarter in New York, POSCO Art Museum in Korea, and Phmom Penh University. His photographs are also in the collection of the Cambodia Royal Museum. In addition, he has published a number of photo books. In January 2006, Baku received the "Sahametrai Kingdom Decoration" from the Kingdom of Cambodia.
